soundbite

soundbite
A short saying, full of concentrated meaning, which consists of a few easily remembered words and yet conveys a particular message. The Reverend Jesse Jackson is a master of ‘soundbitese’. Recognising that he will get perhaps 15 seconds on a news bulletin, he can summarise his argument in an exciting epigram. His rhyming soundbite ‘we’re going to have demonstrations without hesitation and jail without bail’ was a more memorable and catchy way of saying ‘we are not going to spend a long time deciding whether to have a demonstration. We are willing to go to jail for our cause and will not accept bail’.
In Britain, an oft-quoted soundbite is that of Tony Blair when he was an Opposition spokesman on home affairs: ‘Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime’. Another is his ‘Education, education, education’, summarising the priorities of his new administration in 1997.
